The Mens Cup » «
While some might argue that the World Cup is “the greatest sporting event on earth” it surely is the greatest celebration of masculinity on Earth.
Its all about men, their physical prowess and belonging to the tribe. It awakens dormant archetypes and the primal instincts of our forefathers.
With the hunting ground now to be found at Tescos or Wal Mart and mortal combat being played out in the safety of the office or the PS3 it’s no wonder that we need a festival to celebrate and define masculinity.
No longer able to fully physically live out our primal urges we have invested our masculinity into the new demigods , the players. We exalt and empower normal men to enact a physical masculine role and play out our fantasies on the field. All in the name of “the wonderful game”. This picture says it all
At this global man fest we try to connect with some of the tribal and physical aspects of the masculine archetype. For many its enough to make that connection peacefully chanting with other members of the tribe whilst standing on the terraces or crowded round a video screen. For others the primal urges are too strong and need to be lived out in a modern day context of organised hooliganism
Combine that with the estimated Nine million extra pints to be supped in the UK (probably triple that in Germany!) and you’ve got a very heady mixture.
Enter the female of the species!
Wives, girlfriends, mothers and sisters will yet again wonder if mankind and sanity can ever be mentioned in the same breath as grown, middle-aged men suddenly regress to wobbly adolescence.

Of course there are those who are still unable to ground their masculinity, and, frustrated, find a vent for their alcohol fuelled primal urges in other ways. Watching some of the drunken apes drag their knuckles home after a good days supporting its no wonder that many women bear the brunt of the anger and frustration of the male species.
The link between alcohol and violence meant the number of violent incidents between a couple could rise during the tournament.

So while the world is enjoying the greatest celebration of masculinity on Earth we can all take a minute to think about what it means to be a man and offer support to those who suffer at the hands of the frustrated members of the tribe!
We’d all do well to remember that the game so beloved and hyped by us men could simply be summed up as little more than “a group of men chasing a ball around a field”. Absurd? Think about it!
