some frings aren’t what they used to be…

And some things remain the same: England out on penalties, Germany unable to break the spell of playing against the Azzuri and the Germans forever the pessimistic thinkers!

While watching the game last night I was shocked at the lack of enthusiasm and support from the Germans fans on the streets. England may not have the best football team but in contrast to the German show of support on the streets yesterday English fans really are the World Champions!

Its often been quoted to me that the Germans are the “denker und dichter” (poets and thinkers) Yesterday on the streets the atmosphere was really subdued. Instead of the passionate, emotional, loud and animated supporting you might expect from English or Italian fans, the reserved Hamburg audience sat, for the most part motionless, watching the game pensively. Everyone seemed to be in their own penalty box analysing every move. It was almost as if before the game an air of pessimism had crept back in and no one could really believe that the dream could come true and that the team really could win.

And so it was. With Italy’s first goal Germany’s dreams of becoming World Champions at home were cruelly smashed to pieces; like the many bottles of Becks , Astra and Jever which were to suffer the same fate in the frustration and grief of the ensuing death marches home. To add insult to injury, an incredulous crowd had to suffer a second goal in as many minutes!

Come on you blues!

And come they did – instantly. The moment the second goal struck home the hearts of an already deflated crowd sank to the ground. What a way to go out of the tournament. I was really sad too.

The blues just about sums it up today. The atmosphere is muted and sad like Miles’ trumpet. Take a ride across town and you can see die-hard fans who after a night on the tiles are still wearing their flags, stunned and in disbelief. What goes up must come down and gone are, all but a few of, the flags which were waving with such joy and pride only a few hours before. It seems for some its too hard to put a brave face on things and carry on being patriotic in the face of defeat.

Football , like life, certainly is a funny old game and it twists and turns in the strangest ways when you least expect it to. You can play it but can you ever win?

The music and the lyrics to this song are just so fitting for the atmosphere and mood on a day like today when you just can’t make sense of it all. A soothing jazz waltz for a nation with the blues because of the blues. Will it be an all blue final? Only lady luck and fickle fate will tell…

The sea , The sky
And you and I
Sea and sky
and you and I
With all blues
All shades, All hues

Some blues, Are sad
But some blues are glad
Dark and sad or bright and glad
We’re all blues
All shades, All hues
We’re all blues

colour, a colour
the blues are more than a colour
a moan of pain a taste of strife
a sad refrain against which life is plain
blues can be the living dues we all are paying here,
oh yes lord

In a rainbow, a summer day that’s fair
a prayer that’s prayed, a lament that’s made
all goodbyes said
some shade of blue is there
blue, heavens blue,
they are all blues
